MAGDALENA BAY, MEXICO
BAIT BALLS & OCEAN GIANTS
Magdalena Bay is nestled along the west coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico. The surrounding Pacific Ocean is teeming with an astonishing array of marine life. From October through December, this vibrant ecosystem comes alive even more, as a surge in baitfish populations attracts an incredible variety of predators: California sea lions, striped marlin, mahi-mahi, dolphins, and even whales. Above the waves, frigates and pelicans join the action, diving to snag their share in an unforgettable feeding frenzy. It’s a stunning spectacle of nature’s interconnectedness.
With perfect timing, we slip into the water, quiet and unnoticed, to witness this underwater drama firsthand. It’s a feast for our eyes and lenses as we capture the raw beauty of predators and prey in their natural dance of survival.

TRIP OVERVIEW
Day 1: Arrival
Once you arrive in Los Cabos, we’ll set off on a scenic 5-hour drive to Puerto San Carlos, with a relaxed stop along the way for lunch. Our goal is to reach San Carlos just before sunset, where we’ll kick off the adventure with a group briefing and a warm welcome dinner to get to know each other.
Day 2-6: Open Ocean Safaris
Our days start early, with breakfast around 5:30-6:00 AM, before heading out for a quick drive to the boat launch. From there, it’s all about flexibility - our plans shift with the conditions and wildlife activity to make the most of each moment. After about 1 - 3 hours on the boat, we’ll gear up and stay on high alert, ready to slip into the water at a moment’s notice.
Get ready for incredible encounters with humpback whales on their migration, playful California sea lions, Olive Ridley sea turtles, different dolphin species, and seabirds leading us straight to the bait balls. Onboard, you’ll have plenty of snacks, fresh fruit, drinks, and a simple, satisfying lunch (think burritos or sandwiches) to keep you fueled. Our shaded panga-style speedboat offers bench seating and a dry area in the bow. While there’s no marine toilet, bathroom breaks are easy and comfortable for everyone.
Our days on the water are long - 10 to 12 hours of pure excitement and anticipation as we chase those unforgettable wildlife moments. In the evenings, we’ll wind down with dinner, whether as a group or solo, depending on what feels right for you.
Day 7: Departure Day
We’ll wrap up the trip with a relaxed breakfast, some time to share photos, and a moment to reflect on the incredible adventure we’ve just had. Afterward, we’ll arrange transfers to La Paz, Todos Santos, or Los Cabos to get you on your way.
ABOUT PUERTO SAN CARLOS
Puerto San Carlos, in northern Magdalena Bay, is a humble fishing village that’s brimming with character. It’s simple and unpolished, but that’s exactly what makes it the perfect gateway to this extraordinary marine world. Most of the local restaurants spotlight fresh seafood, though you’ll find other options too. The town has a small supermarket and an OXXO convenience store, but card payments can be hit-or-miss, so bringing cash is a smart move. While power outages and patchy internet might remind you just how off-the-grid we are, the raw beauty and closeness to nature here make it all worthwhile.
OUR ACCOMMODATION
We’ll stay at Hotel Alcatraz during our stay - a cozy, family-run gem with simple yet comfortable rooms arranged around a communal courtyard. Maru and her amazing team go above and beyond to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and you’ll likely meet their happy rescue dogs enjoying life on the property. There’s Wi-Fi (best in the courtyard), and they offer handy extras like laundry and massage services if you need them. Expect a bit of local flavor, too - barking dogs, crowing roosters, and the occasional burst of Mexican music are all part of the charm here.

Snorkeling equipment
What are the key requirements to join this expedition?
Swimming Skills: Participants must be strong swimmers and comfortable snorkeling in the open ocean.
Snorkeling Only: Freediving experience is not required. We’ll primarily snorkel at the surface, which allows for better and more respectful whale interactions.
Open Ocean Comfort: You should feel confident swimming in deep blue waters and staying outside on the boat for long hours (10-12 hours per day).
Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?
While we can’t guarantee wildlife sightings - this is the open ocean, after all - each encounter is guided by a touch of luck and nature’s unpredictability. That said, we’ve done everything possible to stack the odds in our favor. With extended time on the water, a highly experienced captain and guide, and choosing the peak season for sightings, we’ve maximized our chances.
In previous years, we’ve had a 99% success rate.
Do I have to be a photographer to join?
No! Whether you’re an underwater enthusiast, a photographer, or simply someone who feels drawn to the ocean’s magic, if you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing one of the most biodiverse places on earth, this is your chance. Let’s make memories that will stay with you forever.
What should I bring?
A detailed packing list will be sent closer to the date, but here are a few essentials to keep in mind:
Reef-safe sunscreen: Protect your skin and the ocean.
Windbreaker, buff or neck gaiter & warm hat: It can get breezy on the boat!
Snorkeling gear: Bring your mask, snorkel, wetsuit (3mm full wetsuit, water temperature: 25-26°C / 77-79°F) and fins (full-foot or freediving fins) for maximum comfort in the water.
Sense of adventure: The most important thing to pack!
